There is a whole lot of attention paid to how addiction can hurt people personally, especially when it comes to families and relationships. But there’s also the business and financial angle to consider. If you’re a business owner, or perhaps even a manager in charge of some aspect of the company you work for, dealing with addiction can be a serious problem that needs a serious solution as soon as possible.
Five categories of thought relating addiction to your business goals and desires deal with the withdrawal period, behavior in front of clients, trouble with financial moment and budgeting, legal implications of addictive behaviors, and trust between business coordinators.
The Withdrawal Period
If you work with people during your typical business day, then you’re absolutely not going to want to be going through withdrawal. The classic symptoms may or may not be apparent, but that fact that internally you’re going to be struggling, and physically you might have jitters, shakes, or tics – that’s not going to be viewed as particularly professional.
Behavior In Front of Clients
And if you’re still on drugs, if you’re still suffering from the process of being in the middle of an addiction, that’s a whole new layer of trouble. Many people know what the visual signs of addiction are, and there’s a pretty strong stigma against it, especially in the professional workplace. Countless people have gotten fired, or even just scared paying customers off, simply for displaying signs and symptoms of addiction or addictive behavior. Imagine going into a store to buy something and the customer service rep keeps sniffling and twitching his mouth. That’s the kind of thing you have to be aware of in yourself.
Monetary Issues
And if you own your own business, and create your own budget, you may have a hard time separating your business money from your fun money if you’re in the clutches of an addiction. Whether you want to hide your finances, or somehow borrow from one place in order to pay it back later, there are consequences for spending lots of money on drugs the further in you get.
Legal Implications
And if you get caught with any sort of drugs, that can immediate either get your fired or cause you to lose your business. Investors will leave you, fines will compound, licenses will be revoked. There’s a whole lot of trouble that can happen from the legal side of addiction in relation to business matters.
Trust Between Business Coordinators
And if you’re a co-owner of a business, or at least have a say in business operations, if your cohorts know that you’re struggling with addiction or recovery, they may either treat you differently, or not respect your opinions and suggestions in a way that they might otherwise.
