It’s so unfortunate that millions of people get into vehicle accidents each year. The reasons are varied. Sadly, these road mishaps often lead to serious physical injuries, permanent disabilities and even death in worse cases.
We often hear about car accident statistics but not many actually know the common types of vehicles that get into these collision situations. Most of the time, what we are familiar with are accidents involving cars against cars or cars against trucks.
The latest report from the U.S. Census Bureau showed that passenger cars are number one in the types of vehicles that get into crashes. More than 5.2 million were recorded by the bureau as against the more than 1.6 million involving utility trucks and more than 1.5 million involving pickup trucks.
In terms of color, a research from Monash University has shown that gray cars are 10 percent more likely to get into accidents while those colored blue or red are seven percent more likely to get into a crash.
At dawn and dusk, however, black cars are more at risk with a 47 percent likelihood and this is because of the poor light condition.
During the day, the same dark colored-car are only 12 percent more likely to meet an accident.
On the other hand, white cars are 10 percent less likely to get into a crash regardless of the time of day.
These statistics should not scare anyone including the teens who are still learning how to drive. The good news is that advances in crash-protection technology in automobiles can now protect drivers and their passengers in case of accidents. A crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety revealed that even in a frontal collision, the driver of a car which is of the latest model can survive the accident compared to the driver of an old car.
Car experts pointed out there are three areas where new automobiles have improved. The first is in the main structure that includes the frames and the so-called crumple zones. The second is in the passenger-restraint systems such as the seatbelts and airbags while the third is in the high-tech active safety systems to include the stability control and anti-lock brakes.
On top of these technology improvements, however, it is still the top responsibility of every driver regardless of age to be cautious and follow the right speed limit when on the road. Speeding is a no-no as well as driving while drunk.
Finally, do not take your car insurance for granted. This will protect you and your loved ones in the event you get into an accident.
