You went to school for years, and you worked your way up to a position of authority. The buck doesn’t stop there. You have to continuously fill your mind with knowledge and information pertaining to your position. This will set you up to be the best business manager you can be. There are also some things that education doesn’t necessarily teach you along the way. If you’re interested in maximizing your performance as a manager, then here are a few tips to help you get started.
Book smarts aren’t all there is to it
Yea, sure you know the material. You know how to run a business from a classroom, but do you know practical application of your skills? Knowing how to do something isn’t the same as doing it, and doing it well! Take time to learn from people who have been in the field longer. Listen to your senior colleagues. They didn’t get to where they are overnight and neither will you. They may have even learned a few things along the way, so be a sponge. You will grow naturally in your abilities.
Project management is crucial
Project management is a huge part of managing a business. When you set up to tackle a project, break it up into tasks and small pieces. You will want to organize your tasks from the largest and most time consuming, down to the smallest and easiest to complete. This way, if you find yourself in a time crunch, you will have smaller pieces of the puzzle to complete at the end. If you have two similar tasks to complete, try and work it to where they are managed at the same time. Kill two birds with one stone whenever possible.
Employee loyalty is just as important
Employee loyalty is just as important as your customer loyalty. You need solid employees. When your employees grow with the company, there is a much stronger sense of duty and pride when it comes to their employer. Don’t be afraid to do nice things for your staff. When they work hard, they deserve gratitude.
Also, hire the right people for the job. Don’t hire your friends. Roles and lines get blurred when you hire your friends. It just asks for complications to arise. Avoid it! Just be thorough when hiring, and try not to hire a bunch of people that you will have to watch over constantly.
Take proper care of yourself
Finally, take care of your own wellness! Sleep deprivation and malnutrition are easier to accomplish than you might think. Don’t work yourself to the bones. To maintain a positive working environment, you have to attend to your own wellness before anyone else can depend on you.
